Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the right to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
