Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Police report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Police then discovered many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests show the liquid was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; investigators are presently not aware of any harm in connection with the incident," they added.
City officials stated they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident made him without words and had to be addressed promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
