The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of the former president's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
